It is a practical choice for a random orbital sander or another tool that specifically accepts 5-inch discs—but the attachment method and dust-hole pattern must match your sander.
What each grit is for
80 grit: removal and shaping
Use 80-grit discs to remove old finish, level uneven wood, smooth rough boards, or reshape an edge. This grit removes material quickly, but it leaves visible scratches. Do not normally stop at 80 grit if the surface will be painted, stained, or clear-coated.
On delicate veneer, thin material, and soft edges, start with a finer grit or use light pressure. Aggressive sanding can cut through veneer or create low spots.
120 grit: general smoothing
Use 120 grit to refine the scratches left by 80 grit and prepare reasonably smooth wood for many painting projects. It is also a useful starting grit when the surface is already in fair condition and only needs light smoothing.
If you can still see deep 80-grit scratches, continue with 120 grit before moving to 180. Sanding with a finer disc too soon can take longer and may leave coarse scratches underneath the smoother surface.
180 grit: final preparation
Use 180 grit for final smoothing before many stains, paints, and clear finishes. It can also help remove light marks between coats when the finish manufacturer permits sanding at that stage.
The correct final grit depends on the wood, coating, and product instructions. Sanding too finely can sometimes reduce stain absorption, while sanding too aggressively between finish coats can expose the layer underneath.
A practical grit sequence
For rough or coated wood, a typical sequence is:
- Start with 80 grit only when substantial removal or leveling is needed.
- Move to 120 grit after the deeper scratches and uneven areas are gone.
- Finish with 180 grit when the surface is smooth and ready for the next coating or finish.
Do not automatically use every grit on every job. If the surface is already smooth, starting at 120 or 180 can reduce unnecessary material removal. Before changing grits, vacuum or brush away dust so coarse particles do not create new scratches.
Use a light, even touch and keep the sander moving. Extra pressure can slow the tool, clog the abrasive, create swirl marks, and wear the sanding pad more quickly.
Check compatibility before buying
A 5-inch diameter alone does not guarantee that a disc will fit. Confirm these details against your sander manual or the existing disc:
- Diameter: The disc should match the tool's required size.
- Attachment style: Many discs use hook-and-loop backing, while some tools require pressure-sensitive adhesive discs. These systems are not interchangeable.
- Hole pattern: Dust-extraction holes must align with the sander's pad if the discs are perforated. A different pattern can reduce dust collection and may affect sanding performance.
- Disc construction: Some tools require a specific backing or pad arrangement. Avoid forcing a disc onto a tool for which it was not designed.
- Abrasive material: Aluminum oxide is common for general wood sanding. Ceramic and other abrasives may be intended for faster cutting or tougher materials, but the manufacturer's intended use matters.
If your sander uses a hook-and-loop pad, select discs with a clean, compatible backing. A disc that repeatedly lifts at the edge may indicate worn hooks, clogged backing, heat damage, or an incompatible disc rather than a grit problem.

Disc quantity
Compare the number of discs at each grit, not just the total disc count. A pack with many 80-grit discs may suit heavy stripping, while a pack with more 120- or 180-grit discs may be more useful for routine refinishing.
Dust-extraction design
Perforated discs can support dust collection when the hole pattern matches the sander and the vacuum connection is working properly. A universal-looking hole layout is not necessarily compatible with every pad.
Abrasive durability
Abrasive quality affects how long a disc cuts effectively before it loads with dust or becomes dull. For paint, resinous wood, and other clog-prone surfaces, an open-coat or clog-resistant design may be useful if it is recommended for that material.
Backing strength
A rigid, well-supported backing helps the disc stay flat during sanding. Replace discs that are torn, badly curled, delaminated, or no longer attached securely.

Choose an 80-120-180 pack when you need one set for a project that may include removal, smoothing, and finish preparation. It is especially useful for furniture, doors, shelves, trim, and general wood refinishing where the surface condition varies.
A different pack may be better when:
- You only need light between-coat sanding; a finer paper range may be more appropriate.
- You are stripping very heavy coatings or leveling damaged wood; additional coarse grits may be useful.
- You are sanding metal, masonry, or automotive materials; choose an abrasive specifically rated for that application.
- Your tool uses a different disc diameter, attachment system, or hole pattern.
- You need a large supply of one grit rather than equal coverage across three stages.
Safe and effective use
Wear eye protection and use respiratory protection appropriate for the dust and coating being removed. Keep the sander's dust collection connected when possible, and follow the tool, abrasive, coating, and finish manufacturers' instructions. Do not sand coatings that may contain hazardous materials unless you know the applicable precautions.
Let the abrasive do the work. Stop the tool before setting it down, and disconnect power before changing a pad or clearing a jam. If the sanding pad is damaged or no longer holds discs securely, replace the pad before continuing.
