If a hook-and-loop sanding pad has become smooth, sanding discs may slip, detach, or spin unevenly. First unplug the sander and inspect both sides of the connection: dust-packed hooks and a damaged disc backing can cause the problem, but flattened or missing hooks usually mean the backing pad needs replacement.
Check the disc first
Remove the sanding disc and examine its loop backing. If the loops are torn, coated with resin, heavily packed with dust, or pulled away from the paper, replace the disc. A worn disc backing can look similar to a worn pad.
Also confirm that the disc matches the sander’s attachment system. A hook-and-loop disc should cover the pad without being stretched over the edge. Discs that are too small, misaligned, or repeatedly peeled off can lose their ability to grip.
Clean dust from the pad
Fine sanding dust can fill the spaces between the hooks and prevent the disc from seating properly.
- Unplug the sander or remove its battery.
- Peel off the disc gently rather than pulling at one edge aggressively.
- Brush the pad with a soft nylon brush to loosen dust.
- Use low-pressure air if the tool manufacturer permits it, while avoiding blowing dust toward your face or into the sander’s vents.
- Inspect the pad again under good lighting.
Do not use solvents, heat, or sharp tools to restore the pad unless the manufacturer specifically recommends them. Cutting or scraping the surface can remove the remaining hooks and damage the pad backing.
Look for flattened or missing hooks
A usable pad should have a fairly consistent field of small hooks. Replacement is usually necessary if you see any of these conditions:
- The surface is visibly smooth or shiny.
- Hooks are flattened instead of standing upright.
- Sections of hooks are missing.
- The pad edge is torn or separating from its backing.
- Discs release even after the pad and disc are clean.
- The disc spins out of alignment during sanding.
Heat, excessive downward pressure, aggressive peeling, and long use with clogged discs can wear the hook surface. A pad can also become damaged if the sander is run against the workpiece without a disc installed.
Check the pad attachment and setup
If the hook surface looks intact, check whether the entire pad is secure. With the tool unplugged or the battery removed, gently check for wobble, looseness, or separation between the pad and the sander. A loose pad can make discs appear not to stick even when the hook-and-loop material is acceptable.
Make sure the replacement or original pad is installed in the orientation specified by the manufacturer. Check the pad diameter, screw or attachment method, dust-hole pattern, thickness, and the tool’s maximum operating speed. A pad that fits the diameter but not the attachment system or hole pattern may be unsafe or perform poorly.
Do not exceed the sander’s rated speed, and do not operate the tool if the pad is cracked, badly warped, or loose. If the attachment hardware is damaged, follow the manufacturer’s repair instructions or have the tool inspected by a qualified service professional.
When to replace the pad
Cleaning is worth trying when dust is the only problem. Replace the backing pad when the hooks are smooth, flattened, torn, or missing. A new disc will not reliably solve a permanently worn pad.
Choose a pad made for the exact sander or one explicitly listed as compatible. Match:
- Pad diameter
- Tool type and model compatibility
- Mounting hardware or thread
- Hole pattern for dust extraction
- Pad firmness, if the manufacturer specifies it
- Maximum rated speed
A soft interface pad can change the sanding profile and may require a separate hook-and-loop surface, but it is not a substitute for a damaged primary backing pad unless the tool maker approves that setup.
When replacing the sander makes more sense
A replacement pad is normally the reasonable repair when the motor runs smoothly and the pad mount is undamaged. Consider replacing or professionally servicing the sander if the spindle wobbles, the pad repeatedly loosens, the tool makes unusual electrical or mechanical noises, or compatible replacement pads are no longer available.
Stop using the tool if the pad vibrates severely, the disc flies off, the cord or battery connection is damaged, or there is a burning smell. Disconnect power and consult the manufacturer or a qualified repair professional before continuing.
