Hook-and-loop discs not sticking
If a hook-and-loop sanding disc will not stay on the backing pad, the most likely causes are dust buildup, worn pad hooks, a damaged disc backing, or a mismatch between the disc and pad. Unplug the sander, remove the disc, and work through the checks below before replacing the whole tool.
1. Clean the backing pad and disc
Fine sanding dust can fill the small loops on the disc or pack around the hooks on the sander’s backing pad. This prevents the two surfaces from engaging properly.
- Disconnect the sander from power or remove its battery.
- Peel off the sanding disc.
- Brush dust from the backing pad with a soft, dry brush.
- Shake or gently brush the back of the disc clean if it is still in good condition.
- Press the disc firmly and evenly onto the pad before restarting the tool.
Do not use compressed air carelessly around a running sander, and avoid solvents unless the tool and abrasive manufacturer specifically allows them. Solvents can damage the pad’s foam, adhesive, or hook material.
If the loops on the disc are packed with resin, paint, or finish, cleaning may not restore a reliable connection. Replace the disc.
2. Inspect the backing pad for worn or missing hooks
The hooks on the sander’s backing pad can flatten, break, or wear smooth over time. This is especially common when discs are pulled off at an angle, the sander is run hot, or the pad is used without an abrasive attached.
Look for:
- Smooth areas with few visible hooks
- Bald spots or torn sections
- A pad edge that is curled, cracked, or separating
- Foam that is compressed or uneven
- A disc that sticks in one area but lifts in another
A worn pad will not hold new discs reliably. Replacing the backing pad is usually the reasonable fix if cleaning does not restore firm, even engagement. Use a replacement that matches the sander’s diameter, hole pattern, attachment style, and manufacturer requirements.
3. Check the back of the sanding disc
A disc can lose its grip even when the sander pad is fine. Inspect the disc backing for:
- Torn or missing loop material
- Wrinkles or delamination
- Heat damage
- Embedded dust or finish
- A curled edge
- A backing layer that has separated from the abrasive paper
Do not try to reuse a disc if the backing is torn or separating. It may detach during sanding and can damage the workpiece or create a safety hazard.
Repeatedly removing and repositioning the same disc can also reduce the life of the loop backing. Avoid peeling discs off unnecessarily, and remove them by lifting the edge evenly rather than sharply bending the disc.
4. Confirm that the disc and pad are compatible
Hook-and-loop products are designed to mate, but not every sanding disc and backing pad has the same dimensions or hole pattern. Verify that:
- Both products use hook-and-loop attachment rather than pressure-sensitive adhesive
- The disc diameter matches the pad
- The disc sits fully within the pad without a large overhang
- Dust-extraction holes line up, if the sander uses them
- The pad has the correct attachment system for the tool
A disc that is too large can catch on the workpiece or peel from the edge. A disc that is too small may not be supported correctly. Misaligned dust holes can also reduce extraction and allow debris to collect between the disc and pad.
5. Avoid excessive heat and pressure
Heat can weaken the disc backing, soften adhesives in the pad assembly, and accelerate hook wear. Excessive downward pressure also makes the sander work harder and can cause the disc to slip or lift.
Use light, even pressure and let the abrasive do the cutting. Keep the tool moving instead of holding it in one spot. If the disc or pad becomes unusually hot, stop and let it cool. Check for a clogged abrasive, a dull disc, excessive pressure, or a sander problem before continuing.
Do not touch a recently used disc or pad until it has cooled enough to handle safely.
6. Check the sanding setup
A disc may appear not to stick when the underlying problem is a poor fit or unusual tool movement. Before sanding, make sure the disc is centered and pressed down across its full surface.
Also check for:
- A loose or damaged backing-pad fastener
- A pad that wobbles while spinning
- A disc edge folded underneath itself
- A pad that is not seated correctly on the sander
- A damaged spindle or backing-pad interface
If the pad wobbles, vibrates heavily, or loosens during operation, stop using the sander. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for inspecting or replacing the pad and have the tool serviced if the spindle or attachment mechanism appears damaged.
When should you replace the disc or pad?
Replace the sanding disc when its loop backing is torn, contaminated with hardened material, badly curled, or no longer holds after cleaning. Replace the backing pad when its hooks are visibly worn, missing, packed with debris, or unable to hold a clean disc across the surface.
If a new, compatible disc will not stick to a new or clearly undamaged pad, the problem may be an incorrect part, a defective disc, or damage to the sander’s pad attachment. Confirm the part specifications before buying again. If the tool continues to shed discs or the pad assembly is loose, discontinue use and consult the manufacturer or a qualified tool-repair professional.

- Store discs flat and dry, away from heat and moisture.
- Keep the hook side of the pad covered or protected when the sander is stored.
- Brush dust from the pad when changing grits.
- Avoid running the sander without a disc attached.
- Use light pressure and keep the tool moving.
- Replace discs before abrasive buildup forces you to press harder.
- Match the disc diameter, hole pattern, and attachment type to the sander.
