A sanding disc that keeps flying off a random-orbit sander is usually caused by a worn or dirty hook-and-loop backing pad, an incompatible or damaged disc, or poor contact between the disc and pad. Unplug the sander before inspecting it, and replace the disc or pad if the attachment surface no longer holds firmly.

Check the disc first

Remove the disc and inspect the paper backing and the loop material.

  • Replace discs with torn edges, curled paper, missing backing fibers, or heavy dust packed into the loop surface.
  • Make sure the disc diameter matches the sander’s pad. A disc that is too small may not engage the pad correctly; one that is too large can overhang and catch on the workpiece.
  • Confirm that the disc uses the same attachment type as the sander. A pressure-sensitive adhesive disc is not a substitute for a hook-and-loop disc unless the manufacturer specifically allows it.
  • Match the dust-hole pattern when practical. Misaligned holes do not usually cause the disc to detach by themselves, but they can reduce dust removal and allow abrasive dust to build up between the disc and pad.

Press a new disc evenly onto the entire pad. Do not rely on a small center area to hold it.

Clean the pad and dust path

Fine sanding dust can fill the loops on the backing pad and prevent the disc from gripping. Brush the pad gently or use low-pressure air according to the sander and abrasive manufacturers’ guidance. Avoid damaging the hooks.

If the sander is connected to a vacuum, check the hose, adapter, and tool inlet for a clog. Empty a full vacuum drum or replace a full dust bag, and clean or replace a loaded vacuum filter as appropriate. Poor dust collection can leave abrasive dust on the pad and work surface, although it is not normally the only reason a disc flies off.

Do not blow sanding dust toward your face, electronics, or an open motor. Wear eye protection and use suitable respiratory protection for the material being sanded.

Inspect the backing pad

With the sander unplugged, look at the pad for:

  • Worn, flattened, melted, or missing hook material
  • Cracks, deep grooves, or a distorted edge
  • A pad that wobbles or sits off-center
  • Dust or debris trapped where the pad meets the tool
  • Loose mounting hardware

A worn pad is the most common reason a previously reliable sander stops holding discs. Replacing the pad is usually more sensible than trying to restore badly worn hooks. Use the replacement type and size specified for the sander; the wrong pad can affect balance, clearance, and safety.

Check setup and sanding technique

Before starting the tool, center the disc and press it firmly across the pad. Keep the abrasive flat on the workpiece and use light, even pressure. Excessive downward force can flex the disc, expose its edge to the workpiece, and pull it away from the pad.

Avoid starting the sander while the disc is touching a sharp edge, corner, loose coating, or nearby obstruction. Lift the tool from the workpiece before switching it off when practical, and stop immediately if the disc begins to lift or flap.

Also check that the workpiece is stable. A loose board or protruding fastener can catch the disc and tear it away regardless of how good the pad is.

Look for a motor or electrical problem last

If a correctly sized, undamaged disc still detaches from a clean, firmly attached pad, inspect the tool for unusual vibration, a wobbling pad, grinding sounds, burning odor, or inconsistent speed. These symptoms can indicate a damaged bearing, spindle, pad mount, or motor problem.

Stop using the sander if it vibrates excessively, sparks abnormally, overheats, or has a damaged cord or switch. Do not open or repair the tool unless you are qualified and the manufacturer permits that service. A repair center or replacement sander is the safer choice when the mounting assembly or motor is damaged.

When to replace the disc, pad, or sander

Replace only the disc when the backing is worn, dusty, torn, or incompatible and a new disc holds securely. Replace the backing pad when its hook surface is visibly worn, its edge is distorted, or it no longer grips several fresh discs.

Consider professional service or a replacement sander when a new pad and discs do not solve the problem, or when the pad wobbles and the tool has vibration, overheating, or electrical damage. Do not continue sanding with a disc that can detach; it can damage the workpiece or become a flying hazard.
